About Me:

Minecraft players Minecraft won't be allowed to purchase game content, such as worlds skins, persona items and other mods through NFTs.

Minecraft, the top-selling video game of all time, will not support NFTs because they "create an environment of haves and the have-nots".

In a strongly worded post on the Minecraft website yesterday (20 July) the developer Mojang Studios said that the incorporation of NFTs is against the game's principles.

The company claimed that NFTs and blockchain technology create digital ownership based on the concept of scarcity and exclusion. This is not in the spirit of Minecraft values of creative inclusion as well as playing with other players and sharing our resources.

"The price speculation of NFTs and the investment mentality surrounding them takes the focus away from the game and encourages profit-seeking. We believe this is incompatible with long-term joy and success for our players."

Minecraft stated that the statement was in response to comments from members of the community who wanted clarifications on the studio's stance on NFTs and blockchain.

The move means that, unlike many other virtual world games, Minecraft will not permit blockchain integrations in its client and server applications. In-game content such as worlds, skinsand other items, and other mods can't be created using NFTs.

Mojang, a Microsoft-owned company has also stated that it is concerned about third-party NFTs. These NFTs aren't reliable and could end up costing customers who purchase them. It offered scenarios where third-party NFT managers could "disappear without notice" or NFTs could be "sold at artificially or fraudulently exaggerated prices".

"We acknowledge that the work we do in our game is intrinsically valuable, and we strive to create a platform where those values can be acknowledged."

Online gaming has seen a rise in interest in blockchain technologies like NFTs. This topic was also discussed at Future Human earlier in the year.

GameStop and other companies have expressed their confidence in NFTs and has also launched its own NFT marketplace.

However, other companies are not making a big investment yet. EA's CEO had previously stated that blockchain and NFTs could represent the future of gaming, but he recently added: "Right now, it's not something we're fighting hard against".
